A 3 Merganser Day

A beautiful, sunny afternoon was just too good to waste so I headed down to the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge and was pleased to find a variety of birds around. I found all three species of merganser

Common (Mergus merganser)
Red-breasted (Mergus serrator)
Hooded (Lophodytes cucullatus)

together on the river along with

Common Goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula)
Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola)
The best find of the day though, may have been the
Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa) near the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge boardwalk.

Every day will bring something new I think. It's time to watch the radar and anticipate that day when you have to call in "sick", because wouldn't it just make you sick to miss a great day of birding?

I have yet to see the Red-breasted Mergansers and it's always wonderful when you find the three species!

A 3 merganser day is definitely a good day in my book too! I don't remember if I've ever managed that one all in the same place. Those red-breasteds are always the hardest ones for me to find!
